Did you know that rabbits can be litterbox trained? This is a huge plus in Floppy’s favor! Bunnies don’t take to litterboxes as quickly or naturally as cats do, though, so you will need to put some time and effort into training your little buddy to use one. In this article, a local Seminole, FL vet offers a few tips on how to litterbox train your bunny.
You’ll need to get a few things for Floppy’s bathroom. You can get a large litter pan made for cats. You can also use a shallow storage tote, or a rubber cement-mixing pan. If you have two bunnies, make sure it is big enough to fit them both at once.
You’ll want to add layers of newspaper and a vet-approved litter substance, such as Carefresh. Avoid clay or clumping litters, as these can cause serious intestinal blockages if swallowed.
The next thing is to put the litterbox into position. One thing that may help is to get a hay rack and put the litterbox beneath it. You may want to set out more than one litterbox at first. Or, just keep Floppy in a smaller area until she’s used to her box. It’s also a good idea to put some of your pet’s waste in the litterbox. This will help her associate the box with its intended purpose.
This is the tedious part! Keep a close eye on Floppy, especially after she’s eaten. If you notice her acting like she has to relieve herself, immediately pick her up and put her in the litterbox. You’ll also need to monitor as she is nibbling on hay. Sooner or later, she’ll go in the box, even if by accident. When she does this, immediately reward her with a yummy treat, as well as praise and attention. You’ll need to be pretty vigilant at this stage, so it may help to keep your pet in a confined area.
Once your pet seems to have the hang of things, you can start removing the extra litterboxes. Just keep in mind that it’s Floppy, not you, who will need to choose where her bathroom goes. Rabbits are quite particular about things like this!
