And Meow, A Word About Cat Towers

September 15, 2021

Does your kitty have a cat tower to play on? If not, you may want to consider getting her one. Cat towers are both fun and beneficial for our feline friend! A Seminole, FL vet discusses Fluffy’s favorite piece of furniture in this article.

Benefits

Cat towers serve several purposes for kitties. First and foremost, your cute pet will gain yet another napping spot. (As we all know, cats can never have too many options for this.) Fluffy will also appreciate the high vantage point, which will let her survey her kingdom. Your feline pal will also gain a scratching post and, of course, a jungle gym. If you have a dog, the tower will also serve as a spot where she can get away from Fido, or perhaps just glare at him from above.

Placement

Choosing the right spot is also important. Here in Florida, screened patios can be a great choice, especially for those who live in small spaces. Your kitty may also appreciate having her tower angled so that she can look out a window. If you have blinds, you may want to get a different type of window treatment. Cats have a tendency to make themselves little doors. This will not only ruin your blinds, it can also be dangerous.

Tip

You’ll find cat towers in many different sizes and configurations. Consider not only the number of pets you have, but their ages and temperaments. A shy kitty may enjoy something that offers an enclosed space, while a senior may prefer something soft, comfortable, and easy to get on and off. If you have more than one furball, pick something that will fit all of them. (Fun fact: when all your feline buddies are on the tower, the one on top is usually the ‘boss’ cat.)

Refreshing

Has Fluffy stopped using her tower? Step one is to give it a good cleaning. Vacuuming will work, but steam cleaning is even better. You can also try recovering it. Another option is to move it or even rotate it.

DIY

Are you working with a tight budget? Go the DIY route. Repurpose an old stepladder for Fluffy! Add wide planks to the steps, and then wrap the whole thing in carpet or sisal rope. Done!
