Keeping Your Dog Hydrated

July 01, 2019

Florida is an absolutely beautiful state, but our summers are definitely scorchers. We’re into the hottest part of the year now. The heat can be very dangerous for our canine pals. Dogs can’t sweat to cool off, and panting only does so much. One thing that is very important is making sure your pup stays hydrated. Read on as a Seminole, FL vet offers some tips on keeping Fido hydrated.

Water Stations

First things first: make sure your furry friend always has fresh water. You may want to consider getting an automated waterer, especially if Fido tends to drain his bowl quickly. If you have a large dog, a big house, or more than one pup, set out multiple water stations. If you have a yard, you’ll want to keep water stations outside as well. Wash your four-legged pal’s bowls daily.

Doggy On The Go

Always bring water along for Fido when take him places with you. You may want to buy a doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser. You can also get some collapsible dishes. These are made of lightweight plastic and can fold to fit into a wallet.

Food

Keep hydration in mind when offering Fido food or treats. Canned food has a higher moisture content than kibble, which is one of its benefits. However, you can add water to your canine friend’s dry food. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Pet Fountains

Pet fountains are a great way to make sure your furry buddy always has fresh water outside. There are some cute ones that spray water when Fido steps on a pad. This is adorable to watch!

Snacks

Nothing gets Fido’s cute tail wagging like a yummy snack! Sodium-free broth is a good option. You can also make your pooch some pupsicles. Make bits of kibble, crushed up treats, shredded meat, cheese, and/or pet-safe fruits and veggies in waxed paper cups, ice cube trays, or cute bone-shaped molds. Pour water or broth over them and freeze overnight.

Ice

While you shouldn’t give Fido too much ice, he can chomp on one or two cubes if he likes them. Drop a few cubes into his bowl on hot days, or just offer them to him by hand. He can also have frozen cubes of sodium-free broth.
