Helping Hedgehogs Adjust: Handling, Enrichment, and Trust

Hedgehogs are becoming quite popular little pets. These adorable little critters may be small, but they have big personalities and are really fun. If you’ve recently welcomed one of these spiky little companions into your family, you may already have found that your new pet has completely charmed you. Of course, as with any pet, it’s important to help a hedgehog settle in well. This helps to build trust and create a safe, happy environment for your spiky little friend.

At Dr. Kathy’s Veterinary Care in Seminole, FL, we are happy to share hedgehog care tips with pet owners. By learning effective hedgehog handling tips and discovering how to encourage pet hedgehog bonding, you’ll build a strong relationship while keeping your little pal curious, healthy, and stress-free.

Hedgehog Care Basics

Hedgehogs are nocturnal insectivores with very specific needs. Because they’re naturally shy and defensive at first, building trust takes time and patience. However, with consistent care and the right environment, hedgehogs often become affectionate and interactive companions.

Unlike dogs and cats, they rely on subtle cues and body language to communicate. For instance, your pet may curl himself into a ball if he is scared. It’s important to do some research, so you understand your little buddy. For instance, hedgehogs can’t see well, but have very sharp noses.  PetMD has a blog on hedgehog care, which you can find here. Spruce Pets also has an article on hedgehogs. Read it here.

Hedgehog Handling Tips

One of the most common challenges for new owners is handling. Those quills can be intimidating at first, but don’t worry: they aren’t sharp enough to cut. It is important to handle with the right technique.

  • Approach your hedgehog slowly and gently. Never pick your pet up while they are sleeping or from behind. This (understandably) can be very scary to small animals.
  • Scoop from underneath using both hands to support their body.
  • If they ball up, give them time to relax rather than forcing contact.
  • Use a soft towel for extra comfort if you’re nervous about quills.

Be gentle, patient, and consistent. Over time, your hedgehog will associate handling with positive experiences, reducing defensive behavior.

Pet Hedgehog Bonding

Bonding is a gradual process. Hedgehogs may take weeks or even months to fully trust their humans.

  • Spend time near your hedgehog daily, letting them get used to your scent and voice. Giving your pet something with your scent on it, like a tee shirt, can help them get used to your scent.
  • Offer small treats during handling sessions.
  • Allow them to explore safely on your lap or in a secure play area.
  • Be consistent—short, daily sessions work better than occasional long ones.

Patience and repetition are key to creating a relationship with your hedgehog. Making every interaction positive will go a long way toward bonding.

Hedgehog Enrichment Games

Like all pets, hedgehogs need mental and physical stimulation. Without enrichment, pets–even small ones–can become bored or stressed. You’ll need to provide some entertainment for the little guy.

Enrichment ideas include:

  • Exercise wheels designed for hedgehogs (solid, not wire).
  • Small tunnels, tubes, and hideouts to encourage exploration.
  • Puzzle feeders filled with insects or kibble.
  • Safe toys that stimulate natural digging and satisfy your pet’s foraging instincts.

These activities support both physical health and emotional well-being. Many toys that are made for dogs and cats are also safe. Hedgehogs can’t see well, so you may find that your pet prefers brightly-colored items that are very visible.

Just be sure to stick with safe options. Avoid anything toxic, small, or sharp, as well as ropes and cords, plastics, and things coated in paint, glitter, or dye.

Creating a Safe Habitat

Making sure that your pet has a safe space is very important. Having the right habitat sets the foundation for healthy living.

  • Choose a spacious enclosure with proper ventilation.
  • Maintain temperatures between 72–80°F, as hedgehogs are sensitive to cold.
  • Provide hiding spaces to reduce stress.
  • Use soft bedding, avoiding cedar or pine shavings that can cause respiratory issues.

If you have a dog, cat, or both, consider elevating the cage so Fluffy and Fido can’t peer in. There are also some clever DIY options you can create, using things like puppy pens or even kiddie pools.

A comfortable, enriched habitat makes your hedgehog feel secure. Exotics aren’t right for everyone. Click here for our blog on choosing an exotic pet
