Senior Cat Care

July 15, 2019

Did you know that cats are officially seniors at age 10? Fluffy usually ages slowly and gracefully, so you probably won’t see drastic changes happening quickly. However, your pet’s needs will change a bit in her golden years. Here, a North Redington Beach, FL vet discusses senior cat care.

Obesity is a very common issue among our feline patients. Extra pounds carry some serious health risks! Pay close attention to your pet’s portion sizes, and don’t go too crazy with treats. Fluffy may also benefit from certain supplements, such as fish oil. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Older cats are very tired. Fluffy will spend the vast majority of her senior years napping. Make sure your pet has lots of comfy spots to snuggle up in. Kitties aren’t very fussy here. While your cat will enjoy store-bought beds, she’ll also be just as content on a soft blanket you folded up and put on a chair or ottoman. Rearrange your furball’s beds regularly to keep things fresh for her.

Senior cats aren’t usually super frisky, but they still enjoy playing. Spend a few minutes a day holding a laser pointer or wand toy for your feline pal to chase. This will benefit Fluffy both physically and mentally.

Veterinary Care

Older kitties are at increased risk of developing specific health conditions, such as heart disease and arthritis. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule. At home, watch for signs of illness. If you notice anything unusual, call your vet immediately.

Make your home a bit more comfy for Fluffy by getting her a litterbox with low sides, which will be easy for her to get in and out of. Your furry pal may also appreciate pet ramps or stairs. If your furball has a cat tower, it may be time to replace it with something that’s lower to the ground and easier for her to climb onto. We also recommend keeping a nightlight on for your feline friend after dark.

Have you noticed how older cats sometimes look a bit disheveled? This is because they often have trouble grooming their whole bodies. Help Fluffy out by brushing her regularly. Remember to work in lots of cuddles as you do this, so she knows she’s being pampered.
