Senior Dog Care Tips

September 15, 2019

Is your dog in or near his golden years? As your canine companion ages, you’ll notice some specific changes in his appearance and behavior. Read on for some great tips from a Seminole, FL vet on caring for Fido as he grows older.

Get A Good Bed

Older dogs often get quite stiff and sore. Fido won’t rest very comfortably on a thin pad! Get him a good, high-quality doggy bed. A child’s mattress with a comforter on it will also work.

Keep Up With Veterinary Care

One of the best things you can do for Fido is to make sure he’s getting the veterinary care he needs. Many dogs develop medical issues as they age. Modern veterinary medicine now offers a wide variety of treatment options, which can help reduce pain, improve range of motion, and/or increase your furry pal’s quality of life. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Suitable Exercise

Your pet will always be the same fun, adorable pooch as always, but as he ages he’ll be more interested in collecting belly rubs than chasing the cat around. Don’t let Fido become a complete couch potato, though. Proper activity is still important, as it will benefit him both physically and mentally. Most dogs need at least a daily walk. Ask your vet for more information.

Provide Little Luxuries

Sometimes the little things in life make the biggest difference. Provide your pup with elevated doggy dishes, so he can eat more comfortably. Pet ramps or stairs will help him get around more easily, while good grooming will keep his fur soft and free of mats. Nail trims are also important. And, needless to say, Fido will never outgrow his love of treats!

Love

Man’s Best Friend knows lots of cute tricks, but his most adorable one may be how he somehow manages to get even more charming with age. There’s something really sweet and heartwarming about seeing an old dog faithfully plodding along next to his favorite human, or just snoring peacefully in the sun. You may also find that your furry friend becomes very calm and affectionate in his golden years. This is a special time in Fido’s life, so take time to enjoy it. Don’t skimp on those belly rubs, either!
