Hurricane Preparation Tips

August 01, 2021

We’re well into summer now … or, as some like to call it, melting season. As you probably know, this time of year is when hurricanes are most likely to form. We have a few months to go before that window closes, so it’s a good idea to make sure you and your furry friend are ready for whatever Mother Nature throws at us. A Seminole, FL vet offers some advice on preparing your pet in this article.

Making Plans

It’s good to have a few different emergency plans. Your escape routes and shelters may change a little depending on where a storm comes from and where it’s heading. Make a list of all pet-friendly shelters and hotels within a few hours’ drive. If your plan is to stay with friends or family, make sure that your pets are welcome, too.

Supplies

We’ve all seen what happens when people rush out for supplies as a storm is bearing down on us: empty shelves. Don’t wait until you see Tampa Bay in a spaghetti chart or that ominous Cone of Doom on the news. Keep at least a week’s worth of bottled water on hand. Make sure you have enough for your pet as well. We also recommend keeping extra stores of pet necessities, such as kibble, catnip, medicine, litter, and treats. A cooling vest for dogs may also come in handy.

Identification

For one reason or another, many people end up riding storms out at home. Even the most loyal pet can run off if they get scared! Make sure your furry buddy is microchipped and wearing ID tags.

Carriers

Pets should always travel in carriers: it’s just much safer for them. Take time to help your dog or cat get used to and comfortable with their carrier. It’s also a good idea to put identification on the carrier. Luggage tags work great for this!

Paperwork

Many shelters and hotels do allow pets these days. However, they may require proof that your furry best friend is up to date on their vaccinations and parasite control. Keep copies of your pet’s paperwork in your glove box. You can also take photos of them with your phone, and then email the copies to yourself. That way, you’ll always be able to access them online.
