Adopting A Senior Dog: Helping Fido Settle

November 01, 2021

November is Adopt A Senior Dog Month! There are far too many sweet senior dogs in shelters, who really just want someone to love them. While puppies are super cute and lots of fun, there’s also a lot to be said for having a calm, lovable older pet that just wants to nap at your feet. Of course, going to a new home is a big deal for Fido, so he’ll need time to adjust. A Seminole, FL vet offers some advice on that below.

Let Him Rest

Fido may sleep a lot at first. That’s only to be expected. Changing homes can be very scary and traumatic for dogs. Your pooch may also need time to recuperate from being in a shelter.

Start A Routine

Pets feel most secure when they’re on a steady schedule. Try to keep Fido on a set routine for doggy activities, like walks, meals, and playtime. (He’ll sort his napping schedule out himself.)

Offer Doggy Comforts

Making your home into a doggy luxury palace isn’t hard. Start by offering your canine pal some soft, orthopedic dog beds. Fido should also have some senior-friendly toys to play with.

Expect The Unexpected

Keep in mind that Fido may have fears or quirks you don’t know about yet. For instance, he might be scared of thunderstorms. Take time getting to know your canine pal, and pay attention to how he reacts to things.

Keep It Pawsitive

Dogs in their golden years have usually outgrown bad habits like digging and chewing. However, Fido isn’t perfect. Don’t punish him or yell at him if he does something wrong. Focus on rewarding good behavior instead.

Change Food Slowly

Fido will need a good brand of food, one that is made for senior dogs. Make any adjustments to his diet slowly. Ask your vet for advice on this, including tips on supplements and serving sizes.

Love And Tail Wags

Many older dogs are very affectionate, and absolutely love getting petted. Spend lots of time with Fido, and make sure he feels loved and safe. You may find that your heart just melts when you see your furry friend looking up at you with that adoring expression or happily wagging his tail when you get home.
