Did you know that March 3rd is World Wildlife Day? While we’re usually focused on pets, we do definitely appreciate and care for wild animals as well. Here, a Seminole, FL veterinarian lists some purrfect ways to make this special day cat-friendly.
We recommend that all kitties stay inside. This is important for Fluffy’s safety, but it’s also crucial for our local wildlife. Our feline pals kill billions of small animals every year! That’s decimating already-threatened wildlife populations. Of course, Fluffy does need entertainment and stimulation. Put a birdfeeder in your yard, where your furball can see it. Talk about the best of both worlds!
Many furballs enjoy watching shows about birds and mice. Try playing Fluffy some shows made for cats. Many of these feature wildlife. You can also pick wildlife-themed movies or documentaries for yourself. Kitties make great cuddle buddies, even if they don’t care what you’re watching!
One great thing about living in Florida? We get to enjoy gardening all year round! Plant some catnip or some pet-safe herbs or flowers. You can check the ASPCA site here for a list of good options. Try to pick something that will benefit local birds and wildlife.
Consider switching to eco-friendly toys, litter, and/or cleaning supplies. Protecting the environment also helps protect wildlife! Do you give Fluffy tuna as a treat? Pick a dolphin-safe brand!
Has your Fluffy been fixed yet? If not, make that appointment ASAP. There are already too many kitties out there in the wild, fending for themselves. Don’t let your kitty add to that population.
There are many wonderful charities out there trying to help wildlife. Many of them rely on charity to get by. Consider making a donation. Even sharing information on social media can help. (Fluffy will be more than happy to supervise as you do this.)
This isn’t an across-the-board recommendation. However, you may find that you enjoy having a fish buddy, such as a betta. Just look up your finned pal’s proper care needs, and put the tank in a spot where Fluffy can see it, but can’t reach it. You can also virtually adopt a whale in Fluffy’s name.
