Plants And Pets: Do’s And Don’ts

March 15, 2023

One great thing about living in the Sunshine State is that we get to enjoy beautiful flowers and gardens all year round. Many of our furry companions love sniffing and investigating plants and greenery! However, there are some things to keep in mind when having both pets and plants. A local Seminole, FL vet offers some tips on this below.

Do: Choose Safe Options

While many plants are safe for Fluffy and Fido, there are also many that can make them sick, and even a few that can be fatal if ingested. Some of the most dangerous ones are daffodils, oleanders, philodendrons, rhododendrons, poinsettia’s foxglove, azaleas, and chrysanthemums. Lilies are especially dangerous for cats: your kitty could go into kidney failure after eating a tiny piece of the plant or drinking a bit of its water. Sago palms are one of the top concerns for dogs. The ASPCA has a great site here that lists both safe and unsafe plants.

Do: Check By Other Names

Don’t forget that many plants have several different names. For instance, the monstera, a very popular houseplant, is also known as the Hurricane plant, Split-leaf philodendron, Swiss cheese plant, and Mexican breadfruit.

Do: Be Cautious Of Placement

Don’t forget that even non-toxic plants can still pose risks. One concern here is the possibility of them falling over onto your furry pal. Don’t arrange plants so that playful pets can knock them over onto themselves. Keep heavy plants on the floor or in thick containers.

Do: Be Careful With Fertilizers

Even plants that are safe can become toxic if sprayed with chemicals, such as herbicides, fungicides, and fertilizers. Opt for eco-friendly products when possible. Otherwise, water lawns or outdoor beds thoroughly after treating them. That way, the chemicals will soak into the ground.

Do: Set Out Pet-Safe Options

Plants are wonderful at filtering air, and can also help make your home nice and cozy. There’s no reason you can’t enjoy some of your favorites. Fluffy may also appreciate a small pot of catnip or cat grass.

Don’t: Put Thorny Plants At Fido’s Eye Level

Dogs have a habit of investigating things by sticking their noses into them. Be cautious when planting things with thorns or spikes at doggy eye level!
