Taking Fido To The Beach

May 15, 2019

Florida’s white sand beaches are definitely one of the best parts of living in the Sunshine State. Many of our canine patients also enjoy going to the beach! You will need to take a few precautions to keep your dog safe and healthy at the shore, however. A Seminole, FL vet offers tips on taking Fido to the beach in this article.

Preparation

Before taking Fido to the beach, make sure he is microchipped, wearing ID tags, and current on his vaccinations and parasite control. Your canine pal should also obey simple commands, like Sit, Stay, and Come.

Water

Fido can overheat very quickly running and playing on hot sand. Make sure to bring plenty of water for your four-legged pal! You may want to get a portable doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser.

Heat

Watch for signs that your furry pal is overheating. Panting is usually the first one you’ll see. Other symptoms include lethargy, a warm back, discolored gums, a dry nose, trembling, and vomiting. If you see any of these warning signs, immediately give Fido water, get him to a cool area, and call your vet.

Fur

Did you know that dogs can get sunburns? Pups with pale or thin coats are particularly at risk. Ask your vet about using sunscreen on your canine buddy. Also, before you leave, rinse Fido off to get the salt and sand out of his fur. Later, when you’re home and your pet is dry, you may want to brush him.

Paw Care

Dogs’ paws are very delicate, especially when they are wet. Fido can burn his feet walking over hot sand or tar. You’ll also need to watch for sharp shells and rocks, as well as broken glass. You can try putting booties on your pup. However, not all dogs will go for this. If your pooch doesn’t like wearing shoes, use paw balm to protect his feet.

Safety

Always put your pet’s safety first. Never leave your furry buddy unattended, even for a minute. Also, avoid areas with heavy wakes or strong currents.

Tail Wags

Offer Fido a bowl of doggy ice cream when you get home. This is a perfect way to top off a fun excursion to the beach!
