Reasons Bunnies Make Great Pets

October 01, 2020

Are you considering adopting a new pet? If so, you may want to think about getting a rabbit. While these guys aren’t as popular as dogs or cats, they really do have some wonderful traits. A Seminole, FL veterinarian lists some of them below.

They’re Adorable

First and foremost, bunnies are ridiculously cute. Floppy’s soft fur, cute face, and huge ears can really melt hearts!

Quiet

We love our canine patients, but they can be quite loud. Some of our feline friends are also very vocal. Rabbits, however, really don’t have much to say. This is a definite plus for anyone who lives in an apartment or condo complex. You won’t have to worry about complaints from the neighbors!

Minimal Training Required

Fido needs quite a bit of training to learn how to be a good boy. Fluffy, on the other hand, may take months or even years to properly train her humans to pet and feed her on demand. Floppy really doesn’t have to learn much, aside from perhaps being taught to use a litterbox. (This is optional, but very helpful.)

Allergy-friendly

Did you know that many people who are allergic to dogs and cats do much better with rabbits? (Note: if you’re allergic to hay, a rabbit probably won’t be the best choice.)

Small Size

While there certainly are some really big bunnies out there, most rabbits stay well below 5 pounds. This puts them in the size range allowed by many landlords and condo associations.

Cleanliness

Another great thing about rabbits is the fact that they are really very clean. They groom themselves, just like cats do. And, as mentioned above, Floppy can even be taught to use a litterbox.

Personality

Rabbits all have their own personalities. Some are shy, some are playful, and some are actually rather bossy. You may be surprised at how charismatic these little furballs are!

Binkies

If you’re wondering what a binky is, it’s basically the bunny version of a happy dance. Rabbits do this when they are feeling cheerful or frisky. Think of it as the rabbit equivalent of a cat’s purr or a dog wagging his tail. (We probably don’t have to tell you this, but binkies are adorable.)
